Strict constriction and soft gathers. My work for Gabriele Garancini on the occasion of the 78th Venice Film Festival for the premiere of America Latina, Masculine and feminine energies meet and define a new aesthetic.
The look is a synthesis of contrasting forces. Hard and soft elements communicate a new idea of beauty and empowerment that goes beyond gender conforming restrictions.
Structural laced collar and corset confine and draw a very defined silhouette, the volume is then finally released in a soft embrace of gathers around the hips and sleeves.
The design plays within the duality of Gabriele's personality, trying to encapsulate and showcase his stance on issues of identity.
The tight laced collar and corset in heavy textured cotton stand out sharply on overlaping layers of sheer voile with the softest shine. The generous draped sleeves and gathered sections around the hips frame the silhouette.
“When did we decide that what we wear is what defines our identity? And what is the point of identifying ourselves anyway?” Gabriele Garancini reflects on all the boxes he had to fit in growing up.
“Does being strong, decisive and determined make a man? And does being fragile, sensitive and insecure make a woman? Why is it that being one thing or the other prevents me or compels me to follow certain behaviours?”.
Ultimately Gabriele stepped down the red carpet as Gabriele, wearing what can truly express his own simple yet complex self.
“With this dress, with this way of presenting myself unconventionally, I hope to be an example for all the kids that feel like outsiders or like they are in the wrong just because of the way they wish to express themselves”.
